Knowing what people are saying about you and your brand online can be vital to ensure that you can deal with any customer feedback issues before they become a crisis. You can also tap in to positive mentions of your company or brand in order to take advantage of PR opportunities.

However using the standard twitter interface can make this a bit challenging since having to do regular searches for a variety of text and not knowing if you have missed a key ‘tweet’ could be very frustrating after the event!

So what can you do to ensure that you know about relevant comment as it happens? Well the good news is that there are a number of tools available that can help.

Tweetdeck is one of the most popular desktop clients for managing twitter accouns and offers a range of features including a tool to follow topics in real time using a saved search facility.

Hootsuite goes one step further in that it does not require you to install any software, being web based, and will enable you to tap into your tailored environment wherever you have internet access.

Both of the above tools also enable you to manage more than one account at a time or monitor a number of saved search strings so that you can monitor a range of relevant phrases if necessary, they also have an iPhone app for those who use one. These are fine if you happen to be in front of a screen at suitable times and obviously have other benefits but what about catching the wave as it happens? How do you respond quickly when you could get mentioned at any time of day. Well there are a number of other tools you could use to supplement your main user interface such as:

  • TweetBeep – Keep track of conversations that mention you, your products, your company, anything, using hourly updates
  • TweetAlarm – Get alerted when someone tweets about your
company, your product or anything that interests you
  • Backtweets – To identify when your or another URL has been mentioned on twitter
